How to Propagate Protea eximia

Oh, hello there! Come on in, grab a mug. We’re going to chat about one of my absolute favorite things to grow: the magnificent Protea eximia. There’s just something so special about these proteas, isn’t there? Their stunning, architectural blooms feel like they belong in a far-off, exotic land, and bringing that magic into your own garden is incredibly rewarding. Now, I won’t sugarcoat it – Protea eximia can be a bit of a diva when it comes to propagation. It’s not the easiest plant for a complete beginner, but with a little patience and the right approach, you can absolutely succeed. Think of it as a delightful challenge, a chance to really get to know your plant.

The Best Time to Start

For Protea eximia, the sweet spot for taking cuttings is usually in the late spring or early summer. You’re looking for new, but firm, growth. This means the stems aren’t super soft and floppy, but they haven’t hardened off completely either. This “semi-ripe” stage gives us the best chance for rooting
